Luke 1 – Song and Video

Annunciation and the Birth of John

What happens?

Zechariah is visited by the angel Gabriel and told that he and Elizabeth will have a son. When Zechariah expresses doubt, Gabriel renders him mute.

Elizabeth conceives and gives thanks to God for her long-awaited child.

Gabriel then appears to Mary, announcing that she has been chosen to bear the Son of God. Mary accepts this calling in faith (the Annunciation).

Mary travels to visit Elizabeth, where Elizabeth recognizes the significance of Mary’s child and both women rejoice in God’s work (the Visitation).

Mary responds with a song of praise, proclaiming God’s mercy and the reversal of human expectations (the Magnificat).

Mary returns to Nazareth.

Elizabeth gives birth to a son who will become John the Baptist. When Zechariah writes, “His name is John,” his speech is restored, and he proclaims God’s promises concerning the child and the coming redemption of Israel.

What Scholars Say

Luke 1 presents the beginning of God’s saving work as the fulfillment of Israel’s hopes, announced through angelic revelation, prophetic speech, and miraculous births. The chapter emphasizes divine reversal, faith in God’s promises, and the continuity of the Gospel story with Israel’s Scriptures, preparing the reader for the mission of Jesus and the renewal of God’s people.

Reflective Questions

Do I assume that nothing truly new can happen because life has gone on the same way for so long?

Am I able to commit myself to what I believe is right, even without knowing the outcome?

Can I recognize moments of grace when they come quietly, later, or in unexpected ways?

Luke 1 – Lyrics

Zechariah entered the temple,
To lift prayers with incense high.
Gabriel’s voice amazed his ear:
“Your prayer is heard — your son will rise.
With spirit strong and purpose clear,
He’ll turn hearts to love made wise.”
The priest in doubt of what he’d heard,
Fell silent at the angel’s word.

Her husband mute, God’s promise true,
Elizabeth rose before the dawn.
New life beneath her heartbeat stirred,
The years of longing now were gone.
She sang, “The Lord remembers me —
His mercy shining for all to see.”

In Nazareth young Mary dwelled,
A hush lay warm on stone and sod.
She turned as light streamed through the air,
An angel’s voice filled her with awe:
“Mary, favored one, take heart—
you will bear the Son of God.”
(you will bear the Son of God)

Her body trembled, eyes grown wide,
“How can this be?” she softly cried.
Then courage rose to still her fear:
“I am the servant of the Lord;
Let it be .. as your word.”
(Let it be .. as your word.)

The road to Elizabeth stretched long,
Mary walked steady, firm, and strong.
She traveled to joy she’d not yet known,
Where faith and hope would join her own.

Zechariah’s house in sunlight stood,
Mary called, her greeting clear.
Elizabeth felt her child leap glad.
And joy burst bright for all to hear.
“Blessed are you,” she cried in faith,
“And blessed the life that’s drawing near.”
Two mothers laughed, hearts aware —
God’s living promise quickened there.

My soul magnifies the Lord,
My spirit springs, my heart takes wing.
The Mighty One has done great things,
And holy is His Name I sing.
The humble find His mercy sure,
The hungry filled, the proud laid low.
His kindness makes glad hearts blaze,
And voices rise in songs of praise.

When Mary turned again for home,
The hills lay gold beneath the sun.
Her heart was full, her spirit strong,
Her faith alive, her song begun.

Within the house of Zechariah,
The waiting days drew swiftly on.
Then Elizabeth called out in joy —
Her child’s first cry, dawn’s new song.

They asked the name .. she proclaimed, “John.”
The crowd looked on in awe and doubt.
Zechariah, then wrote on a slate,
“His name is John,” .. the words rang out.
His voice returned … long silence gone,
Then Spirit broke out in song.

Child you will rise as God’s prophet true,
Prepare His way, the path make clear.
To show His people saving grace,
through mercy’s dawn .. that now draws near.
Light will shine and shadows cease,
new voice, new world, the path of peace.
